Microsoft Introduces “Ultra-Mobile PC” Wireless Tablet Computer
March 25th, 2006Microsoft unveiled the product of its “Project Origami,” a one-inch-thick, tablet-style PC with a 7-inch touch-screen that it calls the “Ultra-Mobile PC” (UMPC). The two-pound device runs a full version of Microsoft Windows XP, supports wireless Internet browsing, and features a 60GB hard drive. The first UMPCs are scheduled to ship for between $600 and $1,100 in April, from manufacturers including Samsung, Asus and Founder Group. Movielink, an Internet video-on-demand service that delivers movies using Microsoft technology, announced that its service will be included with UMPC devices, while Sling Media, whose Slingbox device allows users to access the premium pay-TV channels they subscribe to at home from any Internet-connected device, said it has developed a customized version of its software for UMPCs.
