A.M. ET Digital media software maker Sonic Solutions and copyright protection software maker Macrovision Corp. said Monday they struck a licensing deal to create technology for the custom manufacturing of secure DVDs. Macrovision’s RipGuard and ACP technologies will be integrated into Sonic’s DVD On Demand technology. It will allow content encrypted with the industry-standard content scramble system found on mass-replicated DVDs to be recorded directly to optical DVD media, according to the companies. Sonic will license the new combined technology to video publishers and distributors. The companies said the new service will protect against digital ripping and analog and digital copying, and that DVDs that use the service will have the same audio and video quality, features and protections that commercially massed produced titles have.
